Every day, there is a growing concern for the state of the natural environment that we all inhabit. All of our natural resources, including soils, forests, waterways and the air, are deteriorating because of persistent pollution. Such scourges call for a need to save the world from the menace of environmental pollution. Therefore, regulatory authorities have put up agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to safeguard the wellbeing of the natural environment. One area strictly checked by the EPA pertains to industrial emissions. If you want to start a manufacturing firm, then you must prove to the EPA that the emissions from your enterprise are permissible. Here is what you should expect in the course of this licensing process:

The Pre-Application Stage

The pre-application stage requires an evaluation and identification of the factors that might hinder you from obtaining an EPA license. Start by checking your business premises and make sure that all ongoing works are completed according to the requirements of works approval authorities. Once you are satisfied, create a notice to publicise your intention to get an EPA license. You can execute such a notice through a local newspaper in your area or an erected notice on your premises accompanied by a written request to the relevant authorities.

License Application Stage

The applications stage seems simple, but many people experience delays for failing to follow instructions. First, find out the mechanisms used to apply for an EPA license in your area. Today, most authorities require you to fill out online applications. Take note of any instructions to have documents delivered physically to the EPA offices. Secondly, make sure that you answer the questions correctly. It is advisable to consult a professional on technical issues such as the expected volumes of emissions, the component chemicals and the measures taken to manage such emissions.

Determination, Approval and Objections

The EPA will assess your license application to establish if it meets the required standards for the good of the environment. You will then either receive a license subject to meeting the standards or an objection with a recommendation on the changes you need to make. On the same note, you also have a right to object to the determination made by the EPA and give valid reasons and supporting documentation for the same.

Amendment

If you have an existing EPA license, you can apply for an amended license following the completion of approved works on your premises. The EPA will determine the new limits and the different conditions necessitating the amendments.
